Sara Ramirez has revealed that she is bisexual during a speech at the True Colours Fund's 40 to None Summit, which aims to aid the homeless among LGBT youth.

The star, who is best known for playing Dr Callie Torres in Grey's Anatomy, opened up about her sexuality, saying: "So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections – whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status.

"Because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of colour, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican & Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to."

Sara, who has been married to partner Ryan DeBolt for four years, confirmed that she was bisexual on Twitter, writing: "#40ToNoneSummit #SpeakingMyTruth! Will post full video of speech soon! #ThankYou @TrueColorsFund #WomanOfColor #Bisexual #Queer #Immigrant," along with a snap of herself at the summit.

The 41-year-old actress also recently announced that she planned to leave the hit medical drama after ten seasons, marking the occasion by cutting her long tresses into an edgy buzzcut.

In a statement posted on Twitter, she wrote: "I'm deeply grateful to have spent the last ten years with my family at Grey's Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I'm taking some welcome time off.

"Shonda's been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the ShondaLand family!"
