It was the second round of the brutal US presidential TV debate, so it's no wonder celebrities took to social media in droves to share their thoughts during the heated exchange between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Making their views very clear, Jessica Chastain, Katy Perry and J.K. Rowling all poked fun at some of the moments whilst voicing their support to Hillary.

"Trump says 'just words, folks.' It's his accusation and his defence. Words don't matter. Facts don't matter. If they don't, we're all lost," tweeted the Harry Potter author.

Singing sensation Katy didn't hold back on her opinion, telling her followers: "RT IF YOU ARE YELLING AT THE TV RIGHT NOW. #debates"

Also showing her backing, Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica said: "Im very proud of @HillaryClinton tonight. It was a very uncomfortable debate. When he went low, she went high. #imwithher #debate" [sic]

"Thank u @realDonaldTrump 4 making the invisible gas of racism xenophobia & misogyny to light. Let this be a tipping point for change. BYE," tweeted actress Sarah Silverman.

Hours before the debate, in a video released online, Robert De Niro called Trump "blatantly stupid… he’s a punk, he’s a dog, he’s a pig, he’s a con."

However, Jon Voight - father of Angelina Jolie - attacked De Niro in a series of tweets, claiming he was "ashamed" about his friend's rant.

In a video released online, Robert De Niro called Trump "blatantly stupid"

"I am so ashamed of my fellow actor Bobby DeNiro's rant against Donald Trump," he tweeted. "What foul words he used against a presidential nominee who has worked harder then any other man I know in the past year and a half to get a good message to the American people."

"Donald Trump's words were not as damaging as Robert DeNiro's ugly rant. Trump's words did not hurt anyone," he added.
