Jim Carrey is being sued by the mother of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White for her wrongful death. It comes one month after Cathriona's estranged husband, Mike Burton, filed his own lawsuit against the Hollywood star – both allege that Cathriona took her own life by overdosing on prescription drugs obtained by him.

Lawyers acting for Jim have previously stated that the claims are "bogus" – but Cathriona's mother Brigid Sweetman has said he should be "ashamed" of the way he treated her daughter.

Cathriona White took her own life in September 2015, aged 30

"As a family, we want the world to know the truth about who Jim Carrey really is – a man that will give your daughter three STDs, lie about it, call her terrible names and demean her, use his high-priced layers to try and hut her up and her family up, and then give her illegal drugs.

"He should be ashamed for how he has used his Hollywood attorneys to badmouth Cat's husband Mark with the hope that nobody will hold him responsible for what he did," Ms Sweetman said in papers filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

As previously reported, makeup artist Cathriona died aged 30 from a drug overdose in September last year.

Her mother also stated in her lawsuit that Jim had provided Cathriona with "prescription drugs… despite the fact that he knew full well that Ms. White (a) was ill equipped to ingest and manage highly additive prescription drugs outside the care of a licensed physician; (b) was prone to depression; and (c) had previously attempted to take her own life.

"The result that followed was predictable and foreseeable - Ms. White overdosed on the drugs on or about September 24, 2015, and died."

In response to the new lawsuit, Jim's lawyer Martin D. Singer said in a statement to People: "It is understandable that a mother who has lost a daughter will look for someone to blame. But in directing her grief and rage at Jim Carrey and joining this ridiculous lawyer's attempt to capitalise on Cathriona's suicide, Mrs Sweetman is heading down the same dark path as Cathriona's green-card 'husband', Mark Burton."

Brigid Sweetman said the actor should be "ashamed" of his treatment of her daughter

In an earlier statement referring to the lawsuit filed by Mark Burton – who is being represented by the same layer as Ms Sweetman – Jim said: "I will not tolerate this heatless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control. I really hope some day soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace."

The actor has further stated that the drugs were taken from his home without his knowledge.
