Stars from the soap world and beyond have paid tribute to the late Jean Alexander, who played housewife Hilda Ogden on Coronation Street for more than two decades.
The condolences have been pouring in on social media, with past and present Corrie cast members expressing their sadness.
HELLO! Online blogger Cath Tyldesley, who plays Eva Price on the soap, tweeted: "RIP Jean Alexander... What a mark you made. Legend xxxx."
Georgia May Foote, who quit the show last year, shared a photo on Instagram and wrote: "Jean Alexander such an incredible actress. My thoughts are with your family. #womanstanleywoman."
"RIP Jean Alexander. A true soap Icon. Never will you be forgotten," wrote Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor on the show, while Jack P Shepherd tweeted: "R.I.P Jean Alexander."
Sally Dynevor, who has starred on the soap since 1986, posted: "What a wonderful woman, and such an amazing and talented actress #thankyouforbeingyou."
Piers Morgan called the actress "one of the greatest soap stars in British TV history" while Corrie director Duncan Foster tweeted: "RIP Jean Alexander. I never got to work with you but loved watching Stan & Hilda. Without your brilliance I'm not sure #corrie would here."
Jean passed away on Friday, three days after her 90th birthday. Her niece Sonia Hearld confirmed the news, saying: "My aunt died sadly earlier today."
The actress had been admitted to Southport hospital, Merseyside a few days ago for tests, but was discharged and allowed to return to her nursing home. She was readmitted on Tuesday, on her birthday.
