While all eyes were on The Great British Bake Off on Wednesday, former finalist Ruby Tandoh was busy making headlines for another reason. The cookbook author took to social media to unveil a dramatic new look, having taking the bold decision to shave off all her hair.

Ruby first shared a close-up with her fans on Twitter, which she simply captioned: "do what you want." She then explained her reason for shedding her locks. "I realised I was always hiding behind my big mop of hair and pulling it over my face so I was like… bye curls, hello being unapologetic."

The baking star was quickly inundated with comments from her followers, who were full of praise for her striking appearance. "OMG you look absolutely stunning," one wrote, with another adding: "Gurl you is fierce!"

Ruby made it through to the finals of the 2013 series of GBBO – Frances Quinn was crowned the eventual winner. At the time she found herself at the centre of unkind, and untrue, online speculation that she had only made it through the competition because she had flirted with Paul Hollywood.

The star said she had shaved her head after realising she was always "hiding" behind her hair

She spectacularly shut down those rumours in April 2015, when she came out as gay. "Me to my parents today," wrote Ruby on Twitter, alongside a video of Diana Ross's song I'm Coming Out. "Feeling lucky and joyful and f r e e. over and Out.

"P.s. for those who thought I fancied Paul Hollywood to get ahead," she added. "Joke's on you, you massive misogynists."

It's not the first time Ruby has caused a stir on social media. Just last month she openly slammed judge Paul's decision to stay with the show when it moves to Channel 4, branding him a "peacocking manchild lingering wherever the money is".
