Ryan Phillippe and his fiancée Paulina Slagter have split after five years together, according to reports. The 42-year-old star popped the question just last Christmas – but after an 11 month engagement, the couple have called time on their relationship, a source confirmed to Us Weekly.

Ryan and law school graduate Paulina, 24, made their red carpet debut together at a Hugo Boss event in Beijing in May 2012, and in April last year, the Cruel Intentions actor opened up about their romance.

"She's awesome," he told Howard Stern during an appearance on Sirius XM. "When people see her they have these judgements because she could be a model, but she's about to graduate Stanford Law.

"Also what's great about it – as you get older, certain issues become more important to you. I'm very involved in civil rights issues, and so to be with a woman who could actually make an impact in the legal realm – that's a beautiful thing."

Friends also noticed the positive impact Paulina was having on Ryan. A source close to the star told People in January: "Ryan and Paulina are very much in love. She is changing him. He is a better man.

"Ryan feels Paulina is very intelligent and has opened his mind to equality and civil rights, areas he has never really focused on that intently. Being a student at Stanford Law is impressive to him, and he is very proud of her. He feels that she has the ability to change the world and make it a better place."

Ryan was previously married to Reese Witherspoon from 1999 until 2007; the couple are parents to Ava, 17, and 13-year-old Deacon. The actor is also a dad to five-year-old daughter Kailani with ex-girlfriend Alexis Knapp.

Ryan remains amicable with his exes, and has said that he is "very much" still friends with Reese. "I think more of the problem was age. When we got together we were so young," he told Larry King last year. "I think it can create issues with two people in this industry because there's so much noise that goes along with it."
