Rebecca Ferguson has been praised by fans for her bravery after revealing she was sexually abused as a child. The X Factor star made an emotional appearance on ITV's Loose Women on Wednesday, and said she had previously only told one other person about the incident.

Speaking to panellists Saira Khan, Ruth Langsford, Linda Robson and Penny Lancaster, Rebecca made the revelation when she was asked about Saira's recent confession of abuse.

Rebecca Ferguson revealed she was sexually abused as a child

"It was really interesting because it is something that I've been through as a child. I was abused while I was in a children's home," she said. "I've never said this – this is really weird. I can relate to that… I've never spoken about it. I told one friend, but – as I've launched a website – this is the perfect place to speak about it."

Rebecca continued: "This is what I'm trying to do, make a safe place where women can speak about their problems."

The 30-year-old has launched a website called #Superwoman, in which she hopes to empower other women by helping them to share their stories online. She said it had taken her years to build up her self-esteem following her abuse, and opened up about the impact it has had on her life.

"I think it affects your esteem – how you allow yourself to be treated by men, how you feel about yourself and what you expect to be treated like," Rebecca said.

Following the appearance Rebecca was praised by viewers, many of whom called her "inspirational" and "amazing".

"What an amazing woman @RebeccaFMusic in tears watching #LooseWomen," one tweeted. "Just wanna give @RebeccaFMusic a big hug!" commented another.

Rebecca's career has turned up a notch in recent months, and speaking to HELLO! in July, the singer said she was happier than ever. "People talk about turning 30 as if it's a negative thing but I'm really excited," she said. "For the first time in my life I am happy, content and know who I am."
