Michelle Williams has opened up about the struggles of raising daughter Matilda without Heath Ledger. In an emotional interview with Porter magazine, the 36-year-old - who is promoting new movie Manchester by the Sea - revealed being a single mother to her child has been very testing.

"In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I'm a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you’ve been," she explained. "In pretty much all senses but one. I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad. You know that's just something that doesn't... I mean, it just won't ever be right."

Heath, who was in a relationship with Michelle for three years, passed away after an accidental overdose in 2008. A few months later, the late actor received numerous posthumous accolades, including Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for his incredible performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Michelle Williams has opened up about the struggles of raising daughter Matilda without Heath Ledger

Michelle's latest film sees the star play a heartbroken mother trying to start a new life after a family tragedy. The actress confessed taking on the role of Randi proved to be difficult as it echoed parts of her own life - particularly with motherhood. "I couldn't stop crying," she continued. "It's like the darkest part of your heart, something happening to your child… She's making a brave choice, moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day. Because it is a choice. I would exit... It would be so much easier than living with the loss."

"It just won't ever be right," the star revealed in a new interview

Over the years, Michelle has made no secret that her priority is her eleven-year-old daughter, who she welcomed with Heath in 2005. Speaking about today's dating world, the star confessed she's rather stay at home and look after her loved ones. "I feel really sensitive about it and certainly did not expect to still be dating at 36 with an 11-year-old. This is not what I imagined," she mused. "I'm like a cat, I'm a very domestic creature. I just want to stay home and take care of people. But I'm also happy with myself and just because I might have a desire to be with someone…that won't lead me to marry the wrong person."
