This year's list of extremely popular baby names has seen quite an unusual trend thanks to celebrities! A parenting website, which has released its official top 100 baby names of 2016, officially sees Olivia as the most popular name for girls and Oliver the most popular for boys.

Parenting site BabyCentre also shows Coleen and Wayne Rooney's name choices become a firm favourite with many parents. This year, twice as many babies have been called Kit and Klay compared to the last twelve months, while Kai was a new entry in the top 100 list.

Jamie and Jools Oliver's name for son River has been a popular choice this year 

Elsewhere, Victoria and David Beckham's daughter Harper has become a young trendsetter after her moniker jumped an impressive 31 places to 56 in the girl's list. There was also a surge in parents picking River as they child's name after celebrity chef Jamie Oliver christened his son with that name.

Completing the top ten girls name with Olivia are, Lily, Sophia, Emily, Amelia, Ava, Isla, Isabella, Isabelle and Sophie, while the complete list for boys includes Oliver, Muhammed, Noah, Harry, Jack, Charlie, Jacob, George, Ethan and Henry.

Celebrities have inspired a new wave of baby names this year

The site, which conducted the survey with over 70,000 parents, has also found space themes and superheroes have played an influential part for the new entries. Managing editor of BabyCentre, Sara Redshaw said: "Luna is one of the highest new entries and with 2016 being all about Major Tim Peake's epic space adventure, Star Wars and super moons, it's no wonder names like this have seen a rise."
