Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley have joined forces for HBO's latest miniseries Big Little Lies, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty.

The story follows three mothers who have children in the same class at school but who conflict with the other mums. The tension between the parents slowly grows until a murder is committed but who was killed? And more importantly, who did it?

The first trailer of the darkly comic new show shows Madeline (Witherspoon) and Celeste (Kidman) befriend Jane (Woodley), a young mother who is new to the town. When she tells them how nice they are, Reese's character replies: "This is Monterrey! We pound people with nice!" while Celeste ominously adds "to death."

The trailer then shows the other parents speaking about the three women, with one saying: "Everybody wants to prove who's the richest" while another pair add: "We're talking viciously competitive people… And at the root of it was Madeline."

The characters then hint that Celeste had a role in the events to come, saying: "He's a lot younger than her. Celeste must be pretty… you know." They then gossip about Jane, saying: "Jane just didn't fit here… Kind of like a dirty old Prius parked outside of Barneys." Eventually they hint at the murder, saying: "Things never blow over. They blow up. Boom… So we're like, seriously using the word murder?"

The trio will play mums whose children are in the same class at school

Fans of the novel have been quick to discuss the trailer for the show, which will air in the US on February 19, 2017. One wrote: "It seems a dream all-star cast. Wow!" while another added: "Loved this book and I cannot wait for this to air #BigLittleLies."
