Holly Willoughby has managed to grab a selfie with the Queen... sort of. The presenter shared a photo on Instagram with Her Royal Highness, declaring it her "favourite selfie!!!!"

Holly was posing with a waxwork figure of the 90-year-old monarch, who was dressed in very festive gear – a woolly winter jumper that featured a corgi on it. Other members of the royal family were also kitted out including Prince Philip, Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Prince William and Kate, who shared a cosy double-jumper between them.

The waxworks were so lifelike that Holly even apologised for sneezing in front of them during her presenting duties onThis Morning. "I don't want to give the royals a cold before Christmas!" she joked.

Holly and co-host Phillip Schofield revealed the reasoning behind the fun – the figures were dressed up to launch Save the Children's annual Christmas Jumper Day campaign. The waxworks were borrowed from Madame Tussauds museum for Tuesday's show.

An expert from the attraction, Nicole Fenner, explained that the royal family had given permission for their figures to appear on TV dressed in jumpers. She also revealed that the Queen has sat for Madame Tussauds several times, with this model being the 23rd ever made.

Visitors to Madame Tussauds London will be able to see the royals in their woollies throughout December. "We are delighted to be able to support Save the Children by having our royal wax figures join in with Christmas Jumper Day campaign in a seriously stylish way! We'll be encouraging everyone to take a truly unique picture with the royals and donate in any way they can," said Edward Fuller, General Manager of Madame Tussauds London.

Helena Wiltshire, Head of PR at Save the Children, added: "With the trend for silly Christmas Jumpers showing no signs of slowing down, we're hoping more people than ever will don theirs and pay £2 to help raise money this Christmas Jumper Day. Who knows, maybe the Queen will feel inspired to do her annual speech in a more laidback get up this year!"
