Madonna leads celebrity tributes after Barack Obama delivers emotional farewell speech

After Barack Obama addressed the nation as president for the final time on Tuesday, a chorus of celebrities rushed to Twitter to share their heartfelt tributes. The 55-year-old, who will leave the White House with his wife Michelle and their two daughters after eight years, delivered an emotional speech in his home city of Chicago where he recast his "yes we can" campaign as "yes we did".

Leading the tributes was American superstar Madonna, who described the father-of-two as a "King amongst Men". Alongside a picture of the pair of them, she wrote: "Good-bye Mr. President! There will never be another one like you! Barack Obama you are a King amongst Men."

Fellow pop star Katy Perry, shared: "Thank you for your incredible grace in leadership and for being an exceptional example for us all. You've made many who were sleeping, conscious - including myself. I agree with you; we need to burst our bubbles and build real community again, face to face. I am excited to see the generation coming up who as you said, are 'Unselfish, altruistic, creative, patriotic and believe in a fair, just, inclusive America.' I cannot wait to see good triumph."

Jennifer Lopez shared a clip of Leonardo DiCaprio from The Wolf of Wall Street, saying: "How we wish Obama speech would've ended..." New Voice UK judge thanked Barack for his incredible "leadership". She wrote: "Being able to witness the first African American president was already more than a dream finally realized but to also become a part of that journey will also be one of my greatest achievement. Thank you for so many opportunities of a lifetime! Thank you for your leadership!"

One Direction star Niall Horan also took to social media to tweet: "Don't get me started but I'm going to miss the obamas. The nicest family on earth." Rapper NeYo said: "I don't want this speech to end. #ObamaFarewell."

Later this month, Barack and Michelle - who are parents two daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15 - will be moving to a beautiful home in Washington D.C. before he hands the responsibility of presidency over to Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
