Ed Sheeran is sporting a cut on his face after reportedly being accidentally hit with a ceremonial sword by Princess Beatrice, and the Give Me Love singer has finally opened up about the incident for the first time.

Although he didn't mention the Princess's name, he revealed that he was "covered in blood" after being cut, and didn't immediately realise what had happened. In an interview with Absolute Radio, he said: "I got hit in the face and I was like, all right, okay, and then started carrying on and then I looked down at my shirt and it was just completely covered in blood. And everyone was kind of gaping open-mouthed at me. What have I got a nosebleed or something? What’s happened?"

The star needed stitches after the mishap, which allegedly happened after the Princess swung the sword over her shoulder while pretending to knight singer James Blunt, unaware that Ed was stood behind her. The 25-year-old joked about James's involvement in the accident, saying: "James Blunt would like me to tell everyone that it was him and he was trying to reclaim his pop career by killing me." Ed also mentioned the cut during a gig back in December, saying: "It's nice to be back. I've had a whole year off. I went to Japan for about a month and hung out with Japanese people. Got my face cut open, anyone read about that?"

The singer recently delighted fans by releasing two new singles, Shape of You and Castle on the Hill. In a statement, he wrote: "Hello 2017! I've been working hard on the new material and I hope you can be as excited about it as I am. I really wanted to show two different sides to my music that I'm equally as passionate about and I just knew I wanted to roll with two songs at the same time. I'm absolutely buzzing to be back."
