As she prepares to say goodbye to the White House this week, Michelle Obama took some time out of her busy schedule to send her thanks for all the sweet birthday wishes she received. The mother-of-two, who turned 53 on Tuesday, told her social media followers the greatest gift of all was "the opportunity to serve as your First Lady."
Alongside side a beautiful picture showing her posing with her dogs Bo and Sunny, Michelle wrote: "Thank you for the birthday wishes and for the greatest gift of all: the opportunity to serve as your First Lady."
Michelle was inundated with messages on the day - including one very sweet tribute from husband Barack Obama, who took to Twitter to declare: "To the girl from the South Side who took on a role she didn't ask for and made it her own: Happy Birthday, Michelle. I love you." The US president accompanied the post with a sweet picture of the couple taken in 2009 after the Midatlantic Regional Inaugural Ball in Washington. The politician had been sworn in as the 44th US President earlier in the day.
The couple - who are parents to daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15 - will be moving to a beautiful home in Washington D.C. before Barack hands the responsibility of presidency over to Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
Barack and Michelle's love story in pictures
Last week, Barack addressed the US nation for the last time as president, delivering a sweet message to his First Lady. Turning to his wife, he said: "Michelle - for the past 25 years, you've been not only my wife and mother of my children, but my best friend.
"You took on a role you didn't ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humour. You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody. And a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You've made me proud. You've made the country proud."
