Michelle Obama is saying goodbye to the place she has called home for the past eight years, the White House. The US First Lady posted a tear-jerking video on Instagram, showing Michelle walking through the East Room, Green Room, Blue Room and Red Room of the historical residence.

She was joined by her adorable presidential pet dogs, Sunny and Bo, who accompanied the mum-of-two on her nostalgic walk down memory lane. "Taking it in on one last walk through the People's House," Michelle captioned the clip.

Barack Obama's wife, who celebrated her 53rd birthday this week, also posted a photo with her husband and wrote a poignant thank you note to her supporters. "Being your First Lady has been the honour of a lifetime. From the bottom of my heart, thank you," she wrote.

Michelle recently said that she and her family would be making the most of their time in the White House before their departure on Friday, the day of Donald Trump's inauguration.

Where will the Obamas holiday after Trump's inauguration?

Of her daughters, she said: "We're trying to have them step back and really appreciate the walk on the South Lawn, sitting on the Truman Balcony. I mean, we just want to keep creating some memories for them as well."

Michelle, who was appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last year, added that her daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15, will have a "tough time" saying goodbye to their home, and most of all the White House staff.

The Obamas won't be moving far though. The family will settle into a beautiful home in the Kalorama area of Washington D.C. while Sasha finishes high school.

On Wednesday, while Michelle was saying goodbye to the White House, Barack was giving his last press conference as commander-in-chief. Barack spent the majority of the time talking about his remaining actions as president, but his final moment was a personal one as he was asked about his daughters.

"Man my daughters are something," Barack said when asked how his girls handled the election results in November. "They just surprise and enchant and impress me more and more each day as they grow up. So these days when we talk, we talk as parent to child, but also we learn from them, and I think it was really interesting to see how Malia and Sasha reacted."
