Lin-Manuel Miranda is an Oscar away from EGOT status

January 25, 2017

The man behind the hit Broadway musical Hamilton is one step away from EGOTing - winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

By taking home a trophy at this year's Oscars, Lin-Manuel Miranda will become the 13th artist to ever claim the title. He's nominated for Best Original Song for "How Far I'll Go" from the hit Disney film Moana.

What's more, at just 37 years of age, Lin-Manuel would become the youngest person to win all four awards. In a statement to the Academy about his nomination on Tuesday, the Hamilton star thanked everyone who has helped him get to this point in his career, and also gave a shout out to kids who have big dreams of making it in Hollywood. "Future congratulations to the kids watching the telecast this year, singing along with their favourite songs, performing epic private concerts for the mirror with a comb or a toothbrush microphone," he said. "You're next."

The actor already has a Tony, Grammy and Emmy

Lin-Manuel already has two Grammys to his name -- one for the Broadway musical In the Heights and another for Hamilton. He's also personally won three Tony awards, though the musicals he's created have won several more. His Emmy came courtesy of his work on the 2013 Tonys award show. If he were to win, The New York Times notes Lin-Manuel would join an even more rarefied group of EGOTers - those who also have a Pulitzer Prize. He was honoured with the award in 2016 for his work on Hamilton. Only composers Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch have won all five.

The EGOT-club also includes Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno and Whoopi Goldberg.
