Tom Hiddleston has spoken for the first time about his fateful decision to wear an 'I Heart TS' tank top while he was dating Taylor Swift. The couple were together for just three months before ending their relationship in September – but it was an intense romance, which saw the pair meet each other's parents, travel to a number of countries together, and, of course, celebrate at Taylor's annual star-studded Fourth of July party. Now Tom has opened up about that T-shirt in an interview with GQ.

"The truth is, it was the Fourth of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back," the 35-year-old star of The Night Manager said. "And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, 'Does anyone have a T-shirt?' And one of her friends said, 'I've got this one.' And we all laughed about it. It was a joke."

So how does Tom feel about the 27-year-old Red singer now that they're broken up? "Taylor is an amazing woman," he told the magazine. "She's generous and kind and lovely, and we had the best time together." Acknowledging numerous reports at the time that their romance was a publicity stunt, he then added: "Of course it was real."

Referring back to the tank top, Tom continued: "I don't know. I just, I was surprised. I was just surprised that it got so much attention. The tank top became an emblem of this thing. I only know the woman I met. She's incredible. A relationship in the limelight… A relationship always takes work. And it's not just the limelight, it's everything else. So we decided to go out for dinner, we decided to travel."
