Britney Spears has updated concerned fans on the condition of her niece Maddie, who was involved in a serious accident on Sunday. The eight-year-old daughter of Britney's little sister Jamie Lynn Spears was driving a Polaris ATV when it flipped over into a pond, leaving the young girl trapped underwater for two minutes.
Britney tweeted about her niece's condition, writing: "We are so grateful to share that Maddie is making progress. Thank you all for sending thoughts and prayers our way. Let's all keep praying." It comes after a hospital representative confirmed to People that Maddie was awake and talking. "She is aware of her surroundings and recognises those family members who have kept a round the clock vigil since the accident," the spokesperson said. "Doctors were able to remove the ventilator today and she is awake and talking. Maddie continues to receive oxygen and is being monitored closely, but it appears she has not suffered any neurological consequences from the accident."

Maddie had been driving her ATV in the grounds of her home when she swerved to avoid a drainage ditch and accidentally went into the water. A police report read: "The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes. Within seconds, the child's mother, stepfather and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes Acadian Ambulance Service arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters." Shortly after the accident, Briteny wrote: "Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece," while Maddie's grandfather Jamie Spears said: "All I can say is pray for our baby Maddie."
