Who knew it would cause so much controversy? Ruth Langsford divided opinion when she appeared on screens on Monday for This Morning, wearing a pair of wide leg culottes and a loose-fitting top. Her husband Eamonn Holmes admitted live on air that you have to have a "certain shape" to pull them off, and also compared Ruth to Captain Hook.

"My outfit is causing a bit of a divide between me and my husband today," Ruth explained on Twitter. "These, I would call culottes, they're from Topshop and they've got this kind of flappy thing. I quite like culottes, but he walked in, laughed and said: 'What have you got on?!' And said I looked like a pirate. Anyway, the culottes are from Topshop, the top is from Topshop with this nice sleeve and my witchy, lovely shoes are from Zara, let me know what you think." Ruth gave a twirl for the camera on her Twitter video, leaving fans divided. Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown replied to Ruth, tweeting: "You look incredible xx." Loose Women panellist Andrea McLean agreed, posting: "Gorgeous." Another fan was full of praise, writing: "You look lovely and my 17 year old daughter loves it too, even looking at buying them too."

However, several of Ruth's Twitter followers agreed with her husband. One diplomatically wrote: "Very nice pieces but not together! Too much floating going on. Sorry." Another posted: "Sorry but have to say I don't like it. Culottes are a no no on anyone! Xx" One viewer poked fun at Eamonn, quipping: "It's not as bad as his shirt, he looks like a bishop."

Eamonn and Ruth, who have been together for over 15 years, continued to squabble as they discussed debt on the morning show. The couple, who are standing in for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield while the presenters are on holiday this week, were speaking to money expert Martin Lewis about credit cards. "Here's something I wouldn't want to do, shift my partner's debt to my credit card," said Eamonn. "That's a very silly, chauvinist kind of thing to say, isn't it?" snapped Ruth. "Because I don't have any debt on my credit card. I pay my credit card every month so take that back right now." Eamonn replied: "I would like to see the evidence of that darling, I'm not sure of that," to which Ruth insisted: "Have a look."

However, the couple were soon on good terms and later on in the show demonstrated how to prepare a bowl of mussels for Valentine's Day. Ruth and her husband were pictured tucking into the meal together, with Ruth captioning the Twitter photo: "Reminds of Lady & The Tramp!!"
