Bill Paxton dies at 61 – Hollywood mourns the death of a “wonderful man”

After the sad news that actor Bill Paxton has died, devastated celebrities have mourned the loss of the Hollywood star, who passed away at the age of 61 after complications from surgery. Tom Hanks took to Twitter, writing: “Bill Paxton was simply, a wonderful man, A wonderful man”, while Charlize Theron, who starred alongside Bill in Mighty Joe Young in 1998, wrote: “You were a great friend to me, Bill. AND one of the finest actors to share a set with. Sending so much love to Bill Paxton’s family.” Bette Midler also sent her sympathies: “So profoundly sorry to hear that #BillPaxton has died. My family & I were such fans; we send our condolences and deepest sympathy to his”.

Rob Lowe, a close friend of Bill, described his devastation on Twitter, branding him as one of the “finest actors in the business”. Rob also made sure his memory lived on during the Oscars, writing: “In his memory, on this Oscar Sunday, watch "One False Move" or "A Simple Plan" to see this lovely leading man, at his finest”.

A family representative confirmed the sad news in a statement on Sunday, which read: "It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery. A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father."

The actor's film credits include the 1996 thriller Twister, Apollo 13 and Terminator, and he won an Emmy for the TV mini-series Hatfields and McCoys. He was most recently starring as Detective Frank Roarke in the crime thriller TV show Training Day, and worked alongside his son, 22-year-old James, who had a guest-role. He told People magazine: "I was thrilled to have my son [James, 22,] guest-star on the eighth episode of Training Day."
