Kate Garraway is fast approaching her landmark 50th birthday. And while is she looking forward to the big event, it has led to some candid conversations with her 11-year-old daughter Darcey. The TV presenter opened up about her little girl during an appearance on Lorraine on Wednesday, as she sat down to chat about her new book, The Joy of Big Knickers. "I said to her, 'What do you think about me being an older mum than some of your friends' mums?'" she told show host Lorraine Kelly. "She said for the first time ever, 'I wish you were younger. I just worry that you might die sooner.'"

Visibly-emotional Kate continued: "I feel like there is even more responsibility on me now to take my health seriously, to take being present seriously. Even though I know that actually I can be as energetic as younger people because you have a different focus sometimes. It's the right time for me to be a mum. It made me think some of the issues I've been discussing she has obviously been thinking about as well."

Kate is also a mum to son William, seven, with her husband Derek Draper. She admitted than until she met Derek, she had a warped view of relationships. "I've been finished with by everyone I've ever gone out with - apart from my husband, as yet! – and I was always rather bewildered by this," she explained. "But I used to approach dates like an interview process, and if I didn't get a second date, I'd think I failed a test… instead of thinking we didn't match. The older we get, it's a more challenging time to be out there." Of her husband, she added: "With Derek, there's no choice but to be honest and up front, and it's worked… You can end up like a half person if you're just doing things to please others. There's not a real person there for someone to fall in love with."
