Emma Thompson has recalled the moment she turned down a date with US President Donald Trump. Appearing on Swedish news outlet SVT this week, the British actress revealed the surreal incident happened when she was shooting 1998 film Primary Colors in Los Angeles. She unexpectedly received a phone call from the American politician when she was in her trailer. "I look at it and it's, like, weird," she remembered. "It's like a moose has just entered my trailer. I lift up the phone. 'Hi, it's Donald Trump here.'"

The star added: "I said, 'Really? Can I help you?' and he said, 'Yeah, I just you know, I wondered if I could offer you some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers. They're really comfortable. I think we would get on very well. Maybe we could have dinner sometime?'" Still in shock about the suggested dinner date, Emma continued: "I didn't know what to do with myself. I was absolutely… I was on my own, and I just said, 'Okay, well I'll get back to you! Thank you so much for ringing'." Regretting she didn't accept the offer, the 57-year-old star - who is now married to actor and producer Greg Wise - teased: "Think of the stories!"

One of the presenters chimed: "You could be the First Lady!" At the time Emma had split from husband Kenneth Branagh. She later married Greg, with whom she has a child with and married in 1999. Her six-year marriage to Kenneth ended after his affair with Helena Bonham Carter came to light. In 2013, Emma said she has "made her peace" with her former love rival, before describing her as a "wonderful woman". In an interview with Sunday Times, she explained: "You can't hold on to anything like that. It's pointless. I haven't got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago." Oscar winner Emma previously spoke about the depression she suffered following the end of her marriage. She revealed that it was from her own bitter experience she was able to play her role of a betrayed wife in 2003 film Love Actually. Emma said: "I've had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer."
