Eamonn Holmes and his wife Ruth Langsford walked across the newly-reopened Westminster Bridge ahead of Friday's episode of This Morning as they paid tribute to those caught up in Wednesday's terrorist attack. The bridge was opened 24 hours after the shocking incident took place, and Eamonn said he felt that it had happened too quickly. "On our way to work this morning, we thought we wanted to go there and walk over the bridge and reflect on what happened," Eamonn said. "It's extraordinary actually that it opened so quickly," Ruth added. "And the buses were running and people were going to work…"

Eamonn then remarked: "I think it opened too quickly. I think politicians talk about this stiff upper lip and back to business thing but I actually think out of decency they should have closed the pedestrian walkway, because we were walking past there and we knew where certain people were killed." His wife agreed: "Yes, I found it very difficult because you've seen such graphic photos and I found it very hard and was thinking, if you were the family of those people who have been killed… But I was also talking to a photographer who was out there this morning and he said, 'No, I think it's good. It shows we will not be beaten by these people.'"

Eamonn replied: "But life doesn't go on for the families of those people involved, and I think just a small period of reflection… I think the first thing the Prime Minister should have done was to go out there with a wreath – instead of addressing the House of Commons – to commemorate the people who died in that slaughter. And I just think a day or two of closing that bridge, or a day of national reflection because it's just so sad. Families will be forever affected."

Floral tributes laid in Westminster following Wednesday's terror attack

It comes after Eamonn revealed that Ruth always drives home from Loose Women over Westminster Bridge at the time of the London attack, but by "some freaky chance" that day she didn't. Speaking live from Westminster on Thursday, where he was reporting on the latest from the scene of the attack, Eamonn said: "Yesterday, I was speaking to my wife Ruth who had just finished on Loose Women and she said, 'I'm just heading home now.' Her normal route home would be within three minutes to this bridge and across there and when the news broke later – because it took 10, 15 minutes for the news to come out – I thought 'Where's Ruth?' I couldn't get in touch with her." He added: "It turned out amazingly she went in a different direction, it was just some freaky chance she went in a 'different direction.'"
