The late-show host told the audience during a commercial break that "divas" from back in the day "were better than divas are today" because they have more 'sass' and are more 'fierce' than artists of this generation. Demi heard the British star's remarks backstage and challenged him to a singing match to prove that there are talented singer’s in the 21st century.

Before the two stars sang their hearts out, James taunted the Body Say songstress by saying: "I got hits from before you were born," to which Demi quipped: "I got hits that are my own."

James performed his own renditions of classic hits like Aretha Franklin’s Respect, and Tina Turner’s River Deep, Mountain High. While James complimented his opponent on her stellar vocal range, Demi was less than kind about the host and actor’s voice.
