Magic Johnson has opened up about his son EJ coming out as gay while chatting on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and gave advice to parents about supporting their children no matter what. After Ellen DeGeneres asked him about EJ, he said: "I think it's all about you not trying to decide what your daughter and son should be or what you want them to become. It's all about loving them no matter who they are, what they decide to do. When my son came out I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents and we love him."

He added: "EJ is amazing and so you have to support your child because there are so many people who try to discriminate against them so they need you to support them because if you don't support them, who's going to support them and love them?" The former basketball player and his wife Cookie have previously spoken about their son on Oprah. "I would say it was a shock in the beginning, but also I knew. I was just waiting on him to tell me, and he did," Magic explained. "E.J. is just a lovable guy. As I told him, I said, 'EJ, I love you, so I'm going to support you no matter what.' And I think it made him feel good — because it's one thing with mum. And it was another thing with me, because he wanted my approval. He wanted my support."

During his interview on The Ellen Show, the 57-year-old also chatted about his regret at not investing in Nike stock when it was offered to him at the beginning of his career. He joked: "Boy did I make a mistake! I'm still kicking myself. Every time I'm in a Nike store I get back. I could have made money from everybody buying Nike right now!"
