Ex-England and Aston Villa star Ugo Ehiogu has died aged 44

Ugo Ehiogu has tragically passed away aged just 44 after suffering a cardiac arrest. The former England and Aston Villa defender is survived by his wife Gemma and their two children, Obi Jackson and Jodie. Ugo was coaching the Under-23 team for Tottenham Hotspurs, and the football club posted an emotional tribute to him.

Tweeting a photo of Ugo, they wrote: "It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Ugo Ehiogu, our Under-23 coach. Ugo received immediate treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Training Centre yesterday before being transferred to hospital, where he passed away in the early hours of this morning."

Ugo was 44-years-old

They continued: "Head of Coaching and Player Development John McDermott said: 'Words cannot express the shock and sadness that we all feel at the Club. Ugo's immense presence will be irreplaceable. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Gemma and his family. The Club sends its deepest condolences to Ugo's family.' Gemma has specifically asked that the family are given privacy at this difficult time. We should also like to place on record our thanks to all the medical professionals including those at North Middlesex University Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield Hospital for their care and support."

Fans of the football star were quick to pay tribute to him, with one writing: "Desperate news. Ugo Ehiogu was a fine defender, a caring, thoughtful coach and a wonderful person. Thoughts with his family and friends. RIP." Former striker Stan Collymore added: "Only spoke to Ugo a month ago. Be in a happy place big man, will never forget you pal. Rest in peace big un."
