Alex Jones encouraged prime minister Theresa May and her husband Philip to open up about their marriage during an interview on The One Show on Tuesday. The television presenter spoke to the couple about love and their home life in a revealing interview, which gave a rare glimpse at the personal side of the Conservative party leader.

When asked whether Theresa was a tough negotiator at home, her husband Philip joked: "Well, there's give and take in every marriage. I get to decide when I take the bins out. Not if I take them out." Philip's response prompted Theresa to add: "There's boy jobs and girls' jobs, you see."

Philip continued: "I definitely do the bins. I do the traditional boy jobs, by and large." Alex also asked Mr May about the downside of being married to the prime minister, but he insisted it was a privilege and said: "If you're the kind of man who expects his tea to be on the table at six o'clock every evening, you could be a disappointed man."

During the interview, the couple opened up about one of the difficult moments they have experienced during Theresa's political career, which occurred when she was looking for a constituency. A newspaper wrongly predicted that she would have trouble being selected as a Conservative candidate as she was expecting a baby, prompting Philip's mother to call up in the hope she would receive the good news. "So she was disappointed," admitted Theresa, who has previously revealed that she was never able to have children.

Theresa and Philip were introduced at an Oxford University student disco by a mutual friend, Benazir Bhutto, the future prime minister of Pakistan, and married in 1980. Talking about their first impressions of one another, Philip said: "I thought 'what a lovely girl' - it was love at first sight." The prime minister added: "Likewise."
