Annie Murphy has a true rags-to-riches story after landing the part of socialite Alexis Rose on Schitt's Creek. The Canadian star recently revealed the life-changing part came at a time when she had very little money in the bank.

"Just before Schitt's Creek, things were quite bleak," the Ottawa-born star admitted during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, which aired on Jan. 30. "My house had just burnt down.

"I had, like, $3 in my bank account. I hadn’t worked in close to two years. And I had just blown my very first screen test — like blown it, blown it, blown it."

It was during this rough period that Annie debated about giving up on her dream of acting altogether, but then Schitt's Creek came into her life at just the right moment.

"I found myself crying in the Pacific Ocean, a very snotty cry, and the universe was like, ‘Don’t do this anymore. This is not for you!'" reveals Annie in the candid interview. "But then, two days later, I got the audition for Schitt’s Creek."

The show, which was created by father-and-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, premiered on CBC in 2015. The story of the wealthy Rose family losing their fortune and being forced to rebuild their lives in not-so-glamorous Schitt's Creek proved to be a hit with viewers. It steadily grew in popularity and skyrocketed to a cult favourite, thanks to it streaming on Netflix.

Schitt's Creek might be ending after six seasons, but it will exit with a lasting impression in pop culture and, no doubt, Annie's life.

In tribute to the show, Annie and Kelly Clarkson performed a new version of "A Little Bit Alexis," which tied in Texan Kelly's roots.

Dan Levy also paid tribute to Schitt's Creek ending at the 2020 SAG Awards. The Canadian star wore a dapperDior overcoat that was emblazoned with a white rose. The detail was meant to serve as an homage to the Rose family, according to his stylist.
