Who is Laura Wasser?

Laura Allison Wasser (yes her initials actually spell LAW) has made a name for herself as the 'Disso Queen' of Hollywood due the many A-listers marriages she's successfully dissolved.

The 52-year-old California native has been a member of the California Bar since 1994 after graduating from Loyola Law School the same year. She is now managing partner at the Family Law firm Wasser Cooperman & Mandles.

Did Laura Wasser inspire a film character?

Wasser's reputation as Hollywood's number one divorce lawyer appears to have even influenced a recent film character as she is said to be the inspiration behind Laura Dern's character in the 2019 film Marriage Story.

Dern won an Oscar for her performance as chic divorce lawyer Nora Fanshaw in the acclaimed film about the unravelling of a marriage between a theatre director played by Adam Driver and actress played by Scarlett Johansson.

Wasser represented director Noah Baumbach in his 2013 divorce from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh - which he has revealed he inspired the film - as well as Dern in her 2013 divorce from ex Ben Harper.

Speaking about the film and whether the character was directly inspired by her, Wasser told Vulture: "Maybe. I mean … maybe. I don't know. It's very hard to see oneself that way, but because of the amount of people that have called and texted me about it, I can't completely ignore that that may be the case."

The film also used Wasser's own offices in California's Century City building to shoot scenes. Wasser explained: "Noah asked me whether he could shoot some of the scenes in our office. The larger conference room […] and the super-small one, are both actually in our firm."

Along with her father Dennis Wasser who is also a lawyer, Wasser served as an on-set legal consultant for the movie Liar Liar and appeared in the 2014 documentary Divorce Corp.
