Naga Munchetty has given a rare insight into her 13-year marriage with husband James Haggar, admitting the pair tend to have "succinct" conversations, which could be misinterpreted as being "rude".

During her first week as radio host of BBC Radio 5 Live last week, the BBC Breakfast presenter spoke with psychotherapist and author Philippa Perry about relationships and arguments in lockdown.

Philippa, who is married to artist Grayson Perry, encouraged listeners to avoid using less accusatory phrases such as "you always" and "you…" when communicating in a bid to avoid heated arguments.

In response, Naga explained: "I think also it's really easy as a couple to look at other couples or TV couples and think, 'That's the way to do it'. The way me and my partner speak is really succinct, just because of the jobs we do.

"We're both in TV and have to be really succinct in everyday life and that's how we're used to talking to each other. Others may think, 'Oh, they're a bit rude to each other', but we're not, it's just how we communicate."

Naga then revealed she would find it difficult to "let things lie" and avoid heated discussions, adding: "I couldn't do that, I'd be seething by the time I got to bringing it up!"

Although the 45-year-old tends to keep her private life away from the spotlight, Naga has previously opened up about the advice the couple were given at their wedding in 2007.

She told the Guardian in 2016: "When James and I got married almost 12 years ago, one of his aunts said to us: the best bit of advice I can give you is to simply be kind to one another. She was right."
