The Golden Globes kick off awards season. And they set the tone for what red carpet style is likely to come at future awards shows. The Golden Globes have been part of Hollywood for over 75 years and in that time there have been some absolutely iconic outfits!

There are best-dressed celebrities every year, but these are the truly special outfits that fans remember year after year. These gowns and suits are the ensembles that set the bar and make people dream.

Lupita Nyong'o helped ignite the cape trend in a regal red Ralph Lauren gown. The off-the-shoulder neckline with flowing sleeves was a seemingly simple look, but it guaranteed all eyes were on the actress.

It isn't just about dresses. Fashion-forwardEmma Stone wowed in a Lanvin jumpsuit at the 2015 Golden Globes. The actress's black trousers and draped belt recalled classic tuxedo tailoring while the embellished strapless top brought all the drama one normally expects from a dress. This look was young, playful and unexpected!

Eva Mendes popped on the red carpet in a white Christian Dior dress with statement turquoise necklace. The look captured a summer spirit without seeming out of place during awards season. And it showed that jewels are as much about the outfit as a gown.

Lady Gaga always turns heads on the red carpet and she did at the 2019 Golden Globes in a custom Valentino Couture dress with Tiffany & Co. jewellery. The fact the singer-actress matched her hair colour to her gown made it a pure Gaga moment.

Timothée Chalamet, 2019

Timothée Chalamet has quickly established himself as a stylish star and his bespoke Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton "embroidered bib" at the 2019 Golden Globes solidified his status. The modern harness ensemble was a far cry from a suit and showed there are much cooler options men can experiment with on the red carpet.

Jennifer Aniston, 2004

This black Valentino gown with buckle detail encapsulated Jennifer Aniston's minimalist, timeless style. It fit her perfectly and managed to feel effortless, which isn't an easy thing to achieve with a red carpet gown! Over 15 years on, it still feels like she could wear it on the red carpet today.

Donald Glover, 2017

Donald Glover has a signature style that combines modern and retro elements. He deviated from the traditional black suit to great effect at the 2017 Golden Globes. He took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Atlanta in a brown velvet Gucci suit with coordinating bow tie and white shirt.

Angelina Jolie, 2011

Angelina Jolie is famous for her love of black, but she can also wear colour beautifully as evidenced by this twinkling Versace gown. The emerald green colour is incredible with the actress's dark hair and pale skin. And no statement jewels were needed thanks to the embellished fabric.

Nicole Kidman has graced many best-dressed lists in her time and this radiant blue Gucci gown with peacock feather detail was another one of her iconic fashion moments. The one-shouldered style opened up in the back and featured cutouts.

Billy Porter, 2019

Every red carpet is better when Billy Porter is on it. He shone at the 2019 Golden Globes when he scooped up the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Pose. He wore a silver embroidered suit and cape by Randi Rahm featuring a shocking pink lining. And he worked every inch of his outfit like a pro.

Michelle Dockery, 2013

Michelle Dockery was a gilded beauty in Alexandre Vauthier at the 2013 Golden Globes. The Downton Abbey actress's flowing white skirt was juxtaposed with a striking metallic gold lace bodice. The latter detail had a feeling of armour thanks to its sculptured, fitted shape.

Keira Knightley, 2006

Gorgeous in white! Keira Knightley shone in Valentino at the 2006 Golden Globes. She styled the strapless dress simply with coordinating white jewelry and a clutch so the metallic twisted waist detail and extra-long tassels would remain the focus.

Gemma Chan oozes elegance and that was evident in this Valentino Haute Couture gown with Christian Louboutin shoes. It is extremely rare to see shorts on an awards season red carpet, and it's even rarer to see them carried off in such a chic and appropriate manner, but the Crazy Rich Asians actress succeeded.

Natalie Portman, 2011

Pregnant Natalie Portman stunned in a pink strapless Viktor & Rolf gown when she collected the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her work in Black Swan. The embellished rose drew attention to her baby bump and face. Her red lipstick and clutch brought everything together.

January Jones, 2011

There have been some iconic red dresses throughout the history of the Golden Globes and January Jones's plunging Versace gown from the 2011 ceremony is included. It was a knockout look from the bold colour and cutouts. She elevated the dress by styling it with Old Hollywood hair and matching red lipstick.
