Downtime may not be the most frequent occurrence for David Muir, the lead anchor for several ABC News productions, but his days off are usually spent with his closest companion.

The TV host shared a glimpse of one of his rare weekend days off spent with his adorable pooch Axel on his Instagram Stories.

It looked to be taken while they were on a walk in the New York City streets, and Axel, per usual, looked his best self.

David very rarely provides glimpses into his personal life, choosing to maintain a low profile off the air. However, Axel most commonly features on his personal social feed.

The German Shorthair Pointer has proven to be an important part of the World News Tonight anchor's life, who has spoken about the amount his dog helps decompress.

Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest on Live! With Kelly and Ryan back in September 2020, David gushed about how Axel helped him get through the early stages of the pandemic as they quarantined at their upstate home.

David got to spend some quality time with his pet

"I actually do think that pets are the unsung heroes of all this," he said. "This dog, particularly, bird dog, squirrel dog, frog dog. I mean, you find a frog in the pool, he's good for three hours, just staring at it."

Close friend Kelly commended him for continuing to provide reliable reporting during the early stages of lockdown, both at the desk and on the field, and credited Axel for helping him get through it.

Axel turned four years old in early March, with a celebratory post on social media highlighting how much he'd grown in the years since he'd been adopted by the 49-year-old.

The pooch was also right there for David as he returned following a difficult period of reporting recently in Mississippi, which had been hit by a serious set of tornadoes in late March.

The ABC News anchor has spoken of his dog's purpose as a stress-reliever

"I would think that Axel would be a big part of helping you decompress," Kelly told David at the time, to which he responded: "Coming home to the dog helps put things back in perspective."
