James McAvoy stepped back into the spotlight this week following the end of his marriage to Anne-Marie Duff. The 37-year-old Scottish star put on a brave face as he joined his fellow X-Men Apocalypse co-stars on the promotional trail in New York on Tuesday, smiling as he posed with the group for photos and took part in TV interviews.James has been keeping a low-profile since announcing the end of his nine-year marriage to Anne-Marie earlier this month. The couple - who welcomed son Brendan in 2010 - are determined to remain on the best possible terms, and are reportedly taking inspiration from Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, who have stayed close following their divorce.

"(James) admires how Hollywood couples such as Gwyneth and Chris and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have continued to remain tight as a family after their marriages have ended," a source told Closer magazine. "For now, he and Anne-Marie will continue living together as normal as possible for Brendan, and will carry on with their daily lives as a family. "James and Anne-Marie first met in 2003 when they both appeared as onscreen lovers on the hit TV show Shameless.

James and Anne-Marie Duff announced the end of their marriage earlier this month

While there have been rumours that James' close friendship with his X-Men: Apocalypse co-star Alexandra Shipp, 24, contributed to their split, the source insisted that this was not the case. "They've been through a rocky year and have kept their problems incredibly private - even from their closest friends and family," the insider disclosed. "They did everything they could to avoid a split, but they know it's for the best and are both determined to ensure that they stay as amicable as possible for Brendan's sake. "James and Anne-Marie announced the end of their marriage in a joint statement released earlier this month. "It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce. We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son," it read. "We ask that you respect our and, most importantly, our child’s privacy during this time.”
