Perfect Parisian macaroons for the Beckhams

February 1, 2013

Now that Victoria Beckham will be spending fabulous, fashionable weekends in Paris – thanks to her husband David signing with iconic football team Paris Saint-Germain – she might be tempted to pop in to one of Paris's chic tearooms, such as Ladurée. Established in 1862, this breathtakingly chic venue is now known internationally for its macaroons – the Parisian tearoom's most famous creation. These small, round cakes which, crisp on the outside, smooth and soft in the middle, come in an endless array of flavours such as chocolate, vanilla and salted caramel.

They are the perfect weekend treat, especially for the Beckham brood, who will be spending more time in the City of Light thanks to Paris set as David's new base. On the famous Avenue des Champs Elysess in the heart of the French capital you'll find one of the luxury tearooms, as well as in other central spots including the original bakery, founded by Louis Ernest Ladurée on Rue Royale. The irrestistible delicacies also come in flavours such as rose or orange blossom, which go hand in hand with beautifully delicate and ornate surroundings reminiscent of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

But in case you can't make it to the branches in France – or one of their London-based pâtisseries – anytime soon, we've taken a peek into Laduree's velvety tome, complete with gleaming gilt pages and filled with gorgeous photographs of the dainty pastries that are the finished product all bakers aspire to. With an in-house recipe from Ladurée, the famous Parisian creators of the macaroon themselves, have a go at making yours at home. And if your macaroon shells slightly crack on top, don't despair. Ladurée's chef says that cracked or not, your macaroons will be just as delicious.
