Michael Douglas is one of the latest celebrities to jump on the gluten-free bandwagon. While giving an interview to promote his new superhero flick Ant-Man, the actor admitted that the change in his diet has led to his improving health.

The 70-year-old has previously suffered from throat cancer and in his younger years he spent a 30-day stint in rehab for alcoholism and drug addiction. He also openly attributed his cancer to years of smoking, drinking and stress.

Making a fresh appearance on ITV's Lorraine, Michael said: "I'm great. Five years clean and trying [these new diets], something called gluten-free and I must give it high recommendations for you out there."

The 70-year-old actor said he would highly recommend the 'gluten-free' diet

He added: "I've lost a few pounds from it already, and it supposedly helps your memory and your energy and so I highly recommend it."

The diet, which eliminates food such as bread, pasta, cake and cereal as well as some processed foods, is popular with other Hollywood royalty, including Russell Crowe, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rachel Weisz and Zooey Deschanel.

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic also recently revealed to HELLO! Online that he is gluten-free, after an experience with a holistic medicine doctor made him realise he was intolerant to many foods.

"We are really, really happy and enjoying our time together," Michael said of his family

Michael recently made headlines after his mother Diana, the first wife of Kirk Douglas, passed away. The actress, who was 92, died from cancer at the beginning of July.

Michael spoke fondly about his late mother and their time together in Bermuda, where the Academy Award winner was raised. "My mother's side of the family, you should know, is Scottish," said the actor. "They were originally, say, privateers and ended up in Bermuda in the 1600s and so my family established itself in Bermuda."

"Bermuda is very special," he added. "I was raised there with my mother who passed away just recently and I'll be taking her ashes back to Bermuda soon."

Speaking of his wife of 15 years Catherine Zeta-Jones and their two children Dylan and Carys, Michael said: "We are really, really happy and enjoying our time together and enjoying [time] with the kids, it's a great time."
