No fine dining here! David Beckham celebrated his 42nd birthday earlier this week and sat down to his favourite meal. While the dad-of-four could have asked for anything he wanted on his big day, David opted for some good old British grub. Revealing his "dinner of choice" on Instagram, the sportsman showed off a plate of gamon, chips, coleslaw, baked beans and mushy peas, topped with a fried egg and two pineapple rings.

David's questionable dinner triggered a stream of comments from his followers. One fan quipped: "How random was David Beckham's birthday tea? He could have eaten any meal in the entire world and this is what he chose!" Another asked David's friend Gordon Ramsay to intervene, writing: "I love David Beckham but my god that dinner he put up on Instagram today... @GordonRamsay tell your mate to stop it. So many problems."

However, it looks like the former England football captain also celebrated with a fancy meal out to Mark's Club. David shared a post from the Mayfair-based restaurant, which specialises in Anglo-French classics. He posted a picture of a glass of wine, while his wife Victoria, 43, also shared a sweet photo of her husband tucking into a slice of chocolate cake.

The Beckhams pulled out all the stops for David's birthday. The athlete was treated to countless gifts from his wife and their four children – Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 12, and five-year-old Harper – but his favourite present of all was a personalised hairbrush from his daughter Harper, that had "Daddy" printed on it. Throughout the day, the Beckhams posted sweet tributes in honour of the doting dad. David also shared a beautiful family portrait, showing his house decorated with balloons and birthday banners. "A lot of Love for Daddy today," he wrote.
