'Tis the season to start planning for Christmas, and whether you're hoping to cook the perfect Christmas dinner or transform your home into a winter wonderland, Pinterest has become a huge source of inspiration for millions of people around the world. In fact, there are more than 750 million holiday ideas saved each year around the globe, covering everything from festive fashion to recipes and Christmas wrapping. Now, Pinterest has looked at the top trending ideas for 2017, and these are the ones to try:

FOOD:

The festive season may be considered a time where we're allowed to indulge, tucking into hearty Christmas dinners and desserts, but there is a trend towards lighter alternatives and diet-friendly options for 2017, along with more searches for vegetarian and vegan recipes.

Trending ideas include vegan mushroom wellington, eggnog smoothies and carrot cake baked oatmeal breakfast bars. Get involved with these delicious gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian Christmas recipes, including an inventive four-veg roast. There is also a trend of people looking for a fun and alternative desserts in place of the traditional Christmas puddings and trifles, with gingerbread houses and candy houses proving particularly popular.

More and more people appear to be getting creative this Christmas, with a trend for do-it-yourself crafts, such as making garlands, homemade ornaments and giant Christmas light balloons. But if you're not the creative type, you can easily add a touch of character to your Christmas tree with the kitsch and unexpected decorations that are proving popular for 2017, such as flamingo and tropical ornaments.

When it comes to presenting your gifts, a last-minute wrapping job on Christmas Eve isn't going to cut it. There has been a 129 per cent increase year on year for Japanese furoshiki wrapping, which is not only eye-catching, but eco-friendly too. Meanwhile DIY eye-stamp wrapping paper has also had a 110 per cent increase in searches year on year. Time to get crafting!
