Actress Kristen Bell prepares her favourite holiday cookie recipes without compromising her vegan dietary restrictions. The 37-year-old loves chocolate-covered peanut butter balls, which remind her of Christmastime when she was growing up, and the star now hopes to create the same tradition with her husband Dax Shepard and their daughters Lincoln, four, and Delta, two.

"My parents are from Ohio and making Buckeyes with my mom was really special as I was growing up," she tells Today Food. "It's what I want my kids to remember us doing together." Yet despite her love of delicious treats, she sticks to healthy ingredients when baking. The spokeswoman for American health foods retail chain Whole Foods Market chooses her ingredients carefully, making sure they are free of artificial flavours, preservatives and high-fructose corn syrup.

Kristen shares: "I bake with applesauce, agave, maple syrup or other alternative sweeteners." For Bell, the yearly routine isn't just about devouring desserts, the Frozen beauty also treasures having quality time with her family.

"Baking around the holidays goes way beyond making delicious sweet things," she explains. "The whole act of it — gathering in a warm kitchen, the smells wafting through the house — feels so comforting and familiar."
