There may well be a wine and prosecco shortage this year, but we've found your new favourite drink - and it costs just £6.99 a bottle! Aldi has launched its own version of Aperol, an Italian aperitif called Aperini, which costs less than half the price of the original. Aperol has become increasingly popular over the past few years, and currently retails for £15 a bottle at leading supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons. Aldi promises its own-brand version is infused with "perfectly balanced orange, rhubarb, vanilla and an abundance of herbs and spices".

Julie Ashfield, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi, says: "Not only is our Aperini Italian Aperitif perfectly on-trend, it's also in keeping with our commitment to providing our customers with products of incredible quality and at the best possible price. With customers planning Easter weekend get-togethers, we were keen to extend our spirits offering by introducing a perfect alternative for creating the popular spritz drink. It's equally delicious served over ice with a fresh fruit garnish and a sprig of mint."

The aperitif will be available in stores nationwide from 20 March, and is said to be delicious paired with prosecco and a splash of soda water to create the infamous Aperol Spritz cocktail. Lidl also has its own version of the aperitif called Bitterol, which costs £7.99 per bottle.

A number of supermarkets have developed their own-brand alcohol lines, with many of their wines and spirits winning awards, beating rivals that are more than twice the price. Aldi's spirits range won over 70 medals in international competitions in 2017 and has been named 'Own Brand Spirits Range of the Year', while Lidl has won awards for its Vodka Putinoff Platinum 5 and Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc NV sparkling wine.
