“I needed a real ‘It Girl’ from London,” fashion designer Charlie Brown said about importing pricey UK supermodel Jodie Kidd to Australia's Fashion Week. The trip Down Under plus Jodie’s fee cost $40,000, but was worth the buzz.
Jodie is in demand after taking a year off from the runway for a much-deserved holiday. “I was 15 when I started modelling and I needed a break,” she said. “Anyone would.”
The Charlie Brown show kicked off the week-long festivities in a rainy Sydney with Kidd posing in front of a tattered American flag before strolling the catwalk in a leather bustier and long tulle skirt.
Though eagerly anticipated, the Summer 2002 collection was deemed less than fashion forward by some onlookers. Classic black and white dominated which seemed a bit dated as European stores offer a similar look for this summer.
Designers from Australia, New Zealand and Asia are using the Fashion Week to showcase their designs in 37 different shows.
