Fashion house Versace is the favourite of stars such as the Appleton sisters, Victoria Beckham, Liz Hurley and even Camilla Parker Bowles, but now it seems that a security guard from one of the stores in London may have got in on the act – with devastating consequences.

Wayne Wright, one of the bouncers at the Old Bond Street store, went missing after more than £1 million-worth of jewels disappeared from the boutique’s safe on May 5 of this year. A substantial amount of cash, rumoured to be as much as £500,000, is also unaccounted for.

It is understood that the haul included a ring worth a quarter of a million pounds and a diamond-encrusted watch valued at £70,000. A spokesperson for the store said that the company had been “very anxious to keep this matter quiet to allow officers to pursue their enquiries”. She also refused to comment on the suggestion that the thief was working for the store when the goods disappeared.
