Some of their names become household words, yet the fickle nature of their craft means few fashion designers will enjoy enduring fame. British designer John Galliano has taken a step closer to professional immortality, however, with the announcement that the London Design Museum intends to mount the first major exhibition of his work.
The exhibition, entitled John Galliano At Dior, will be overseen by Sunday Times fashion journalist and esteemed fashion historian Colin McDowell. It will offer an insight into the development of the designer’s style through garments into accessories, cosmetics and fragrances.
Eschewing the traditional exhibition concept – with mannequins dressed in examples of his designs – the London Design Museum will present Galliano’s art through TV, film, music, lighting and the clothes themselves. The intention is to bring the excitement of the designer’s renowned catwalk shows to the general public.
The exhibition will run from November 30, 2001, to April 28, 2002.
