Top designer Alexander McQueen has again teamed up with American Express to offer 500 VIPs a Gold Card featuring one of his Autumn/Winter 2001 sketches.

“I wanted this design to be a work of art,” says fashion’s reigning bad boy. “The design itself reflects American Express’s prestigious image and lifts traditional gold bullion embroidery from my most recent collection.”

The card was issued on September 1, and reportedly graces the wallets of Kate Moss, Erin O’Connor and Bjork – all handpicked by the designer. However, 50 cards will be given away to the lucky winners of an internet contest at the firm's website.

This isn’t Alexander’s first dealing with American Express and the Gold Card. “We launched the Gold Card in August 1997,” says an AMEX director, Doug Smith. “We came across the idea of designing a gold suit to promote it, and McQueen was the designer we went to first. He’s the leader of the pack, the best really.”

The following year they enlisted the former chief designer for Givenchy to design their technologically savvy card, American Express Blue. And in 1999 they spent over $1 million on a New York fashion show for the enfant terrible.
