Designers Dolce & Gabbana last night showed their solidarity with the victims of New York’s terrorist attack when they presented their latest collection. In Milan, their Spring-Summer 2002 show was filled with models clad in vests with “I♥NY” emblazoned over images of the stars and stripes flag.
“We love New York,” said Stefano Gabbana after his and partner Domenico Dolce’s show, “and we wanted to do something in our own spirit, out of respect.” Although none of the Italian designers have cancelled their shows, the atmosphere was more low-key than normal. Giorgio Armani has cancelled a major after-show party, although the maestro of Milan still has plans to inaugurate his new, state-of-the-art fashion theatre next Monday – with none of the usual celebrity front rows in attendance.
One star who did make it to Milan was actress Charlize Theron. A former model, the star of The Cider House Rules returned to her old career and took a trip down the runway for Italian fashion brand Blunauta. The statuesque South African, who stars in Woody Allen’s latest movie, The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion, donned a brown velvet suit, as well as an oriental-style jacket for her turns on the catwalk.
