Model Sophie Dahl made her West End debut on Tuesday night in the wildly popular and provocative play The Vagina Monologues. And while the 24-year-old beauty and former flame of Mick Jagger confessed she was “scared stiff” before the Arts Theatre performance, she was no doubt encouraged by the presence of her biggest fan: her mum Tessa.
“She was great, but I’ve heard all the lines before because Sophie’s been rehearsing with me,” says Tessa, the daughter of famed author Roald Dahl. “I think everything she does is wonderful.”
The once voluptuous model, who has now famously slimmed down to a size 12, joined the production in the role previously played by Jerry Hall. And while the two are both one-time muses of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, theatre producer David Stone insists there is no grand plan to employ all of the legendary rocker’s past loves. “We’ve received some interest from Bianca Jagger,” reports Stone. “But it’s not like we’re trying to get everyone who’s ever slept with Mick.”
Sophie, who caused controversy with her naked adverts for YSL fragrance Opium, took to the stage alongside Miriam Margolyes, who soon begins work on the second Harry Potter film, and veteran actress Sian Phillips. This is not the model’s first time performing bits from the celebrated show, however. Sophie took part in a one-off charity London production of The Vagina Monologues on Valentine’s Day in 1999, sharing the spotlight with Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Calista Flockhart and Melanie Griffith.
The Obie Award-winning play, written and oft performed by Eve Ensler, has enjoyed several limited engagements on the West End since opening in 1999. The current production is set to run through at least the end of December. There’s no word yet on who will be next to join the revolving cast, which in recent months has included Sopranos actress Edie Falco, pop star Dannii Minogue and Oscar-nominee Amy Irving.
