She may be 61 years old, but maverick designer Vivienne Westwood is still one to watch. The English enfant terrible - until that title was hijacked by Alexander McQueen – of fashion has teamed up with Swatch and has designed a range of timepieces for the Swiss company, now in its 20th year of trading.
The new collection, named “Flying Time”, consists of five limited-edition watches which reflect some of the unconventional designer’s finest fashion movements; punk, pirates, 18th and 19th century French portraiture, royalty, and the future. Each imaginative and individual watch is branded with a name to co-ordinate it with its era; Seditionaries, Anglomania, Cocotte, Portrait and Flying Time.
This is not the first time Vivienne Westwood has teamed up with the watch manufacturer – during the 1990s the same collaboration teamed up to produce the widely popular Swatch POP creations, Swatch Orb, Putti and Life Ball. This latest venture, ranging from the tough, urban black leather straps of the Seditionaries watch to the elegant, graceful baroque floral design of the Portrait watch, is proof that, after 20 odd years in the business, neither Swatch nor Ms Westwood are ready to turn their backs on the drawing boards quite yet.
