Supermodel-turned-supermum Cindy Crawford, who was panned by critics for her role in the 1995 action adventure film Fair Game, is being lauded for her recent foray into acting in the independent flick The Simian Line, directed by the award winning Linda Yellen.
The film depicts four couples who are told by a psychic over dinner that one of the partnerships will shortly come to an end. The gilt-edged cast includes Lynn Redgrave, Harry Connick Jr., Eric Stoltz and William Hurt.
"It was like acting camp for two weeks," says the traditionally outspoken Cindy, who was pregnant during filming and had to overcome morning sickness in less than ideal conditions – all the actors were sharing a single dressing room.
The millionaress mother-of-two, who has appeared frequently on TV in the US, was initially hesitant about accepting the role of the upwardly mobile but insecure Sandra because she was no longer “actively pursuing” acting, she said.
However, the director’s confidence in her soon made Cindy, 35, change her mind. Her banter with Harry Connick Jr. between takes was used to make their characters more flirtatious than was originally planned, and the favourable critical reviews she has so far received seem to justify her decision to pursue her interest in acting.
It remains to be seen how the film, which opens across the US this week, performs at the box office.
