With New York fashion week just weeks away, big name designers not generally associated with Manhattan have committed to the February event in a show of solidarity.

Germany’s Hugo Boss is among those leading the transatlantic migration. “We feel that it is very important to support New York and America during these difficult times, and there is no better way to do so than to host our fashion show in conjunction with 7th On Sixth,” says Boss chairman and CEO Werner Balderssarini. 7th On Sixth is the division of International Management Group that organizes the twice-yearly extravaganza.

London-based designer Matthew Williamson – a favourite of Jerry Hall, Minnie Driver and Helena Christensen – makes his New York debut in February, as does Missouri-born Jeremy Scott. The American, who is known for his irreverant designs, had planned to show his last collection in Paris in early autumn but cancelled following the September 11 attacks.

“The decision to show… has a real double meaning,” says Scott. “Now, not only am I supporting the industry that I love, I am also supporting the country that I love. I totally feel like the American son.”

Paris-based Michael Kors, creative director of Celine, also intends to show the latest collection for his signature line in Manhattan. “7th On Sixth shows the strength, unity and importance of New York as a global fashion capital,” he says. “I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Oscar de la Renta, Tommy Hilfiger, Cynthia Rowley and Perry Ellis have all confirmed shows at one of fashion week’s two venues, the Bryant Park tent and the more intimate Theatre in Soho’s Puck Building.

Calvin Klein is set to debut his women’s collection in New York as well, but chose to present at Chelsea’s Milk Studios rather than the official 7th On Sixth catwalks.
