With Valentine’s Day approaching, a host of celebrities have put their creative – and romantic – minds to work, designing heart-shaped platinum pendants for an online auction. Cameron Diaz, Renée Zellweger and Gwyneth Paltrow are just a few of the stars who have put their necklaces on the block in the Women With Heart project to raise money for their favourite charities.

Twenty-two of Hollywood’s biggest female stars, from Drew Barrymore to Catherine Zeta-Jones sketched their own heart design then teamed with a jewellery professional to create the necklace. The pendants are two-of-a kind, as only a pair of each exists – one for the celebrity to wear and one for the auction.

“We thought the concept was a good one, but we didn’t realize how good until all of these celebrities immediately agreed to participate,” Platinum Guild International (PGI) president Laurie Hudson, sponsor of the event, told Fashion Wire Daily.

Pendants include Reneé Zellweger’s creation, which spells “grateful”, and Courteney Cox-Arquette’s cut-out heart, proceeds from both of which will go to a Los Angeles area breast cancer program. Designs by Charlize Theron, singer Faith Hill, and American Beauty star Thora Birch, who wore her three-carat diamond heart to the Golden Globes in January, are also up for bid.

At least one of the top names who took part may be following in the footsteps of actor Brad Pitt, who recently signed on to create jewellery for prestigious Italian designer Damiani. Britney Spears, who wore her tiered heart necklace in the Overprotected video, has an excellent design sense, according to designer Christian Tse. “We’re going to try to work with her again,” says Christian. “We’ve already talked about her designing a whole collection.”

Online bidding began February 1 at sothebys.com and preciousplatinum.com, and continues through February 12. Sponsors are hoping the auction will raise upwards of $250,000 for the selected charities.
