The once fuller-figured Sophie Dahl caused a stir with her new look on Tuesday. Modelling Zac Posen’s stunning new collection at the New York Fashion Week, the formerly curvaceous model showed off her new svelte size 12 figure – she was formerly a size 14 - to excellent effect, and was greeted by whoops and cheers from the audience.

Wearing a regal white-lapelled asymmetric tuxedo dress and lacy top, Sophie was the image of waif-like elegance – a look that has won the 24-year-old catwalk queen lucrative deals with Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy.

Sophie was not the only star who had the fashion luminaries talking. The show’s designer, Zac Posen, exploded onto the New York scene with all the hype one normally expects from old school veterans such as John Galliano and Marc Jacobs.

The 21-year-old New Yorker, who dropped out from London’s Central St Martin’s School last year, has designed clothes for Naomi Campbell and Jade Jagger in the past. But with this autumn/winter collection, entitled “Artemis”, Zac attracted a celebrity set that included President Bush’s daughter Barbara and the editor of US Vogue, Anne Wintour.

The show recalled times gone by with structured Thirties-style silhouettes and the glamour of the Forties, revealing a maturity beyond the designer’s years. Among the 32 premiered, a lavender pleated corset and a one-piece slender trouser suit with fabric-covered buttons were particular highlights.

“I have seen several shows this week,” said Red Hot Chilli Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis after the show. “But nothing as intense as this. You have just seen the future. Zac is the past, the present, and the future of fashion!”

New York Fashion Week ends on Friday February 15.
